About the temple
▼About Shōkō-ji Temple
This is a quiet temple located in the heart of Kyoto, just a short distance from Kyoto Station.
It was founded by Enjun Hōin, the son of Kanpaku Kujō Michika, who became a disciple of Saint Shinran (some twelve years after his return to Kyoto) at the age of fourteen in the second year of the Kangen era (1244), approximately 770 years ago.
In 1277 (Kenji 3), he built a single hall in Kujo Village, south of Kyoto, and was granted the imperial name “Saikō-ji” by Emperor Go-Uda.
Since the temple split into two—Saikō-ji and Shōkō-ji—under the 11th head priest, Yūjū, this temple has continued as Shōkō-ji on Mount Saikō (Katsumiya-den), and is now in its 27th generation, with Shaku Shōmei (Masuo Ōyagi) serving as the head priest.
