About the temple

▼About Shokoji Temple
This is a quiet temple located in the heart of Kyoto, just a short distance from Kyoto Station.
It was founded by Enjun Hōin, the son of Kanpaku Kujō Michika, who became a disciple of Saint Shinran (some twelve years after his return to Kyoto) at the age of fourteen in the second year of the Kangen era (1244), approximately 770 years ago.
In 1277 (Kenji 3), a single hall was constructed in Kujo Village, south of Kyoto, and Emperor Go-Uda bestowed the imperial name “Saikō-ji” upon the temple.
Since the temple split into two—Saikō-ji and Shōkō-ji—under the 11th head priest, Yūjū, our temple has continued as Shōkō-ji on Mount Saikō (Katsumiya-den), and is now in its 27th generation, with Shaku Shōmei (Masuo Ōyagi) serving as the head priest.
▼What is Shomyo?
Shomyo is a form of music with a history of nearly 1,200 years in Japan, consisting of sutras set to traditional melodies transmitted from India, China, and Japan.
When you join your palms in prayer before the Buddha and listen to Shomyo, a pure sense of peace gently spreads within the quiet flow of time.
