About the temple
▼About Myoken-ji Temple
Long revered as "Myoken-sama of Yamashina," this temple has preserved its sacred image as a "hidden Buddha" that is unveiled only once every 33 years.
It is said that Myoken-sama descended upon a rocky mountain called Norikura in Hinokigahara over 1,300 years ago. After Emperor Shomu developed a deep faith in Myoken-sama, the deity was revered during the reign of Emperor Kanmu as the guardian of the imperial capital.Later, for reasons unknown, Myoken-sama had been buried underground for a long time. When people unearthed the statue and enshrined it in a small shrine, this marked the beginning of Myoken-ji Temple.
