▼About Nisshōzan Hōun-ji
Hōun-ji, with the mountain name Nisshōzan.
It belongs to the Jōdo-shū Nishiyama Fukakusa sect.
Its head temple is Seigan-ji (located on Shin-Kyogoku Rokkaku-sagaru).
It was founded in 1591 (Tenshō 19) by the monk Chōō Gyokushun, to whom Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s mother, Ōmasa, was a devout follower.
It was originally founded in the Shijo-Omiya area near Jurakudai.
In 1983 (Showa 58), it was relocated to Nishigamo.
The current main hall was completed in 1901 (Meiji 34) using leftover materials from the construction of the Imperial Envoy’s Gate at Higashi Hongan-ji.
The stone statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva on the temple grounds stands 10 meters tall, making it the tallest single-carved stone statue in Japan.
It is the 29th of the 48 sacred sites of the Rakuyo Jizo Bodhisattva Pilgrimage.
It is home to the Jizo Bodhisattva of Child-Rearing. The view from the main hall, featuring Mount Hiei and the 36 Peaks of Higashiyama, is spectacular.

Pass through the mountain gate and climb the stairs to find Nissho-an on your right; continue climbing to reach the main hall.
Since the main hall is situated on a hilltop, you can enjoy views of Mount Hiei and the Gozan no Okuribi (Five Mountains Fire Festival).
