About the temple

▼About Hōun-ji Temple on Nisshōzan Mountain
“In the 19th year of the Tenshō era (1591), a petition was submitted to Toyotomi Hideyoshi to construct the temple buildings.”
Hōun-ji Temple was founded in the 19th year of the Tenshō era (1591) by the Venerable Chōō Gyokushun.
Venerable Gyokushun, who enjoyed the deep trust and respect of Ōmasa, the mother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was granted approximately 600 tsubo of land by Hideyoshi in Shijo Ōmiya, the heart of Kyoto.
However, in the first month of Tenmei 8 (1788), the temple buildings were destroyed in a fire that spread from the Imperial Palace.
With no prospect of reconstruction in sight, the project remained stalled for over 100 years. Eventually, the temple commissioned Heizaemon Ito, the master carpenter of the Imperial Envoy’s Gate at Higashi Hongan-ji, to rebuild the main hall. In March 1901 (Meiji 34),the current main hall, constructed primarily of zelkova wood, was completed.

Hōun-ji is one of the few temples in Kyoto City that offers scenic beauty, providing a panoramic view of magnificent landscapes, including Mount Hiei.
From the Main Hall, you can enjoy a panoramic view stretching from Kumogahata to Mount Hiei and the 36 Peaks of Higashiyama, allowing you to appreciate the scenery throughout the four seasons.
