About the temple
Designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Kyoto City, this temple is known as a hidden gem for autumn foliage. Highlights include the Main Hall, a pond garden designated as a Scenic Spot since the Edo period, and a folding screen painted by Kano Eitaku titled “Cloud and Dragon.”
The Hojo (abbot’s quarters) is a 325-year-old former samurai residence that was relocated from the childhood home of Lord Tsunamura, the fourth lord of the Sendai Domain and the central figure in the “Date Disturbance.” Perhaps because it was the residence of Tsunamura, who was nearly poisoned, the building features elements rare for a temple, such as hidden compartments for warriors and a “nightingale floor” (a type of sound-absorbing wooden floor).
