About the temple
Daizen-ji Temple is located a 10-minute walk from Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a famous tourist attraction in Kyoto, just west of the former Kiyomizu Elementary School.
As a Kishimojin deity associated with childbirth andsafe childbirth, and the prosperity of descendants. Since ancient times, there has been a custom of offering pomegranates to the deity, and because many pomegranate trees were planted in the surrounding area, the temple was known as the “Pomegranate Temple of Eastern Kyoto.”
The bridge connecting Daizen-ji Temple to the cemetery is called Ryozan Bridge. It is said that if you chant “Namu” before crossing, then recite “Myoho-renge-kyo” while taking five steps across, you will reach “Ryozan Jodo”—a world free from delusion.
From Daizen-ji, you can admire a beautiful five-story pagoda that harmonizes with the scenery of the ancient capital. The ceiling of the main hall is adorned with Nishijin-ori, a textile representative of Kyoto, which is also well worth seeing. (Photography permitted)
Although located in one of Kyoto’s most famous tourist spots, Daizen-ji is a temple nestled in the tranquility of an ancient sanctuary.
On clear days, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Higashiyama area from the rooftop. Please pay the admission fee at the reception desk.
