About the temple
Affectionately known as “Kurotani-san,” Konko-in is one of the sub-temples of Konkai Komyo-ji, the head temple of the Jodo sect.
While Kyoto is home to many representative temples—including the birthplace of the “Shinsengumi”—Kōmyō-in was the very first of the 18 sub-temples to be built. It is a truly unique temple, founded after receiving the precious characters “Kin” (Gold) and “Kō” (Light) from its head temple, Kinkai Kōmyō-ji.
Please spend a relaxing moment in our traditional wooden buildings while gazing out at the Japanese garden. We offer a space where you can find peace for both body and mind in this sacred temple with 460 years of history.
*Please note that although the names are very similar, [Kinkoin] is a sub-temple of Kinkakumyoji Temple.
Please do not confuse us with Kinkakumyoji Temple (the main temple). Please refrain from directing inquiries to the main temple. [Kinkoin] is located two buildings to the left of Kurotani Kindergarten within the grounds.
▼About the Space
The main hall features a glass-walled layout consisting of a 12.5-tatami-mat room connected to a 10-tatami-mat room, creating an open space with a view of the spacious garden.
Fireflies thrive in the stream of our Japanese garden, which showcases the colors of the four seasons, such as weeping cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. You can view the fireflies from late May to mid-June.
For evening use, we can illuminate the garden. Please contact us in advance if you are interested.
At Konko-in, we operate the temple with the vision of utilizing this sacred space to create “an open temple, a temple that contributes to the community, and ultimately, a temple that is a happy place.”
In March 2025, we opened our temple lodging, “Konko-in Hotaru-an.”On days when there are no guests staying overnight, the rooms may be available for photography or other uses. Please contact us if you are interested.
In addition, although it operates on an irregular schedule, we have a temple café called “Kurotani Konko-in: A Whimsical Café at the Temple.” For those using the space, we can provide food and beverages if you make a reservation in advance.
In February 2025, we converted a vacant lot of about 150 square meters (formerly used as a vegetable garden) next to the garden into a lawn area and planted 18 cherry trees. This space can be used for various purposes, such as events and cherry blossom viewing.Furthermore, while walking pets is not permitted within the grounds of Kinkaku Kōmyō-ji Temple, pets—including dogs in a dog run—are welcome on the lawn area at Kinkō-in. However, since Kinkō-in is located within the grounds of Kinkaku Kōmyō-ji Temple, you will need to carry your pet or have them carried to Kinkō-in while on the temple grounds.
