About the temple
Our temple, one of the sub-temples of Myōshin-ji, the head temple of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, was founded in 1599 (Keichō 4) by Ishida Mitsunari as a family temple for his father, Lord Masatsugu of Oki. He invited Zen Master Hakuba, a scholar of great virtue at the time, to serve as the temple’s abbot.
The study hall from that era is now used as the main hall and retains the atmosphere of days gone by.
The garden spreading out in front of the main hall is said to have been designed by Kano Eitoku, and its landscape has remained unchanged since the Momoyama period.Additionally, the Hyotan Pond in the garden was modeled after the gourd seal used by Lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi to commemorate his military victories.
