About the temple

▼About Chojusan Honcho-ji Temple
Honcho-ji Temple is located in the southwestern part of Kamigyo Ward, on the site where the Imperial Palace of Heian-kyo once stood.

The street in front of the temple is called Izumi-dori, a name said to derive from the high-quality water that once sprang from the ground there.

The name Shichiban-cho dates back to the Hideyoshi era, when a settlement known as “Shuraku-tei” existed east of Senbon-dori. It began with the placement of residences for various daimyo and samurai under the shogunate in the surrounding area, and today it is a quiet temple town dotted with temples of various sects.
